The phrase ‘Bishy Bishy Barnybee’ is the local Norfolk word for a ladybird (although some contest that the Norfolk term was actually ‘Bushy Bushy Barnybee’ and that the ‘Bishy’ part is local only to Norwich). The origins of the word are difficult to establish. Suggestions include that the term was inspired by a Bishop Barnabas of Norwich, who wore a scarlet cloak, or that the name derives from Bishop Bonner’s Bee.

Traditionally the bright scarlet ladybird is a symbol of hope and luck. It is considered to be a sign of good fortune if one lands on a person’s hand or clothing. However, it must be allowed to fly away of its own accord, and must not be brushed off (a gentle puff to help it on its way is permissible, apparently).

The deeper the ladybird’s colour, the better luck it brings. Likewise, the number of spots on its back is important. The more spots, the better the luck.
